SM14: Using Building Analytics to achieve Optimum Building Performance

Modern buildings contain data records of everything that happens within the building services systems but how many of them use this data and if so, do they use it effectively? The presentation will involve case studies that examine the way in which this data can be used to ensure that all components of a building are working as they should and to optimise their on-going performance. This session will provide participants with the knowledge to identify methods of using data analytics to optimise and maintain the performance of their buildings.

Andrew was born and educated in UK and emigrated to Australia in 1970 after receiving a Masters Degree in Mechanical Sciences from St Catharines College, Cambridge.
After his arrival in Perth, Andrew worked in the Mechanical Building Services industry with Government, Consulting Engineers and Contractors. For 4 years in the late 1970s he set up as a specialist commissioning sub-contractor commissioning the HVAC systems for many of Perth’s premier buildings and in the 1980s he established a consulting engineering practice in conjunction with an electrical engineer.
In 1992 Andrew established Crabtree Engineering Software to develop software for the HVAC industry. This was temporarily put on hold in 2007 when he joined IBMS to open their Commissioning Management Division which he ran until his retirement in 2014.
During this time, he was frustrated at how long it took to obtain the data necessary for effective building tuning and the lack of available software tools to analyse the data. Since his retirement he has developed iSynapse, an analytics program to overcome many of these issues.
